"Perseverance"
LJ Duffy
Encaustic/Mixed Media
Six 8" x 10" wood panels
2008
My mind bursts forth with conceptual ideas, craving to be translated into thought provoking, “you complete the story” pieces. I work on multiple pieces at a time, employing representation, abstraction and invention, while experimenting with a variety of conventional and unconventional mediums. Oil, acrylic, encaustic, mixed media and secret recipes all find a home in my work. Using ordinary, familiar objects with sometimes, ethereal figures, I mingle together many layers of paint and hinted patterns. I try to create a nostalgic and time-worn painting that hints at the common experiences of generations past and present. My goal is that the viewer will be able to “connect the dots” with their own personal tale. Themes of hope, encouragement, and grace inspire my work.
"Force of Nature"
Cynthia J. Smidt
Aqua Pencil On Watercolor Paper
16.5” x 14.5”
2008
My artwork is deeply influenced by light, color, and my profound reverence for the natural world. I work to translate the magic of life into visual imagery. Each encapsulates the beauty and life force of an individual piece of flora. While many of my subjects go unnoticed, they are not the mere background scenery to be forgotten. They are objects of powerful contemplation.
"Recognition"
Lee Withington
Acrylic
24"x 18" x 1.5"
2007
My work as a painter reflects my interest in the natural cycle of growth, death and decay, the interconnectedness in all life forms and revealing the overlooked.
"Steer"
Helen Todd,
Photograph
16" x 20"
2006
Helen Todd is a photographer who focuses on objects and details often overlooked in everyday life. Anywhere there is rusting metal or peeling paint, Helen can be found, searching for a different type of "Northwest landscape". Her evocative photographs encourage observers to take a closer look at the unappreciated beauty of decay.
"At Peace"
Mimi Riley
13" x 24"
Acrylic and Graphite on board
2008
It is vital for me to "speak my truth". I perceive and think of my world in symbols, they are a shortcut for specific people or things in my life. I am telling my history and the way I experience life in symbols: which for me communicate the essence of a subject in a way that a straightforward representational image cannot. The bees for example represent recurring thoughts buzzing around in my head, issues that I probably will struggle with all my life. I often create these symbols in a flat manner to indicate that they exist only in my head, yet they are part of how I experience the world.
"On the Other Side"
Kathy Kimball
Acrylic and Mixed Media
24" x 20"
2008
After painting realistically for a number of years I began using abstract forms to loosen up and play more with paint and textures. I knew how to paint an apple and wanted to explore painting emotions. What would joy look like or grief? Experimenting with collage and building gesso surfaces on canvas allows me to experiment with adding color and shapes in a different form of communication. On the Other Side was about being in the energy of creativity, away from work demands, for a brief time during the day.
"Dawn"
Kristina Hagman
Wood Block Print
15" x 17"
2006
I have been selling my paintings and prints professionally for thirty years. Through portfolio reviews I have had the opportunity to study with some of the painter/ printmakers I most admire, Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Diebenkorn and Nathan Oliveira. I am currently self publishing an ambitious wood block print series of 36 different views of Mount Rainier, which will be exhibited in it’s entirety at Seattle University February of 2010.
"Fan Dancer"
Mary Bess Johnson
Digital Photograph
13" X 17"
2008
I find the underwater world a uniquely serene and graceful environment. It is my intent
to reflect that elegance and tranquility in my photographs.
