2008 Shows!
I recently participated in a group show entitled, "Seven Painters: Not In The Same Boat", during the
First Thursday Art Walk on March 6, 2008 from 6-9PM at
Collins Pub located at 526 2nd Ave, Seattle , WA 98104. Our show featured the work of Seven Seattle Women Painters that work in a variety of styles depicting numerous subjects and levels of abstraction.
"Seven Painters: Not In The Same Boat"
We were told on our first day: create a series. For us, this means putting together pieces that share at least to of the following: color palette, subject matter, the shape and size of the substrate. But from that point on, we are like boats sharing the water: no two are alike and the self-guided vessels go in many directions. We gently rub up against one another calling out with encouragement any time one of us is in need. Our instructor, professional artist Kristen Ramirez holds us afloat, providing support and guidance. Together in our studio at Pratt Fine Arts Center, we create landscapes, abstracts, representational work and even humorous pieces in a wide range of media. We are excited to share what we have accomplished separately and together.
Tiffany Dodge
Spurred on by fond memories of watching the alluring scenery from the window of her family car during yearly summer road trips Tiffany began to paint landscapes in 2005. Working from digital photos of recent trips, she has developed pieces that remind us of both the absence of people and their presence in the serenity of her predominantly blue and green landscapes of Georgia, Missouri, and eastern Washington.

As a professional interior designer my work often reflects my interest in architecture and my environment. But in my art work I want to stay away from the analytical use of three dimensional space of my profession and not let the end product direct the process but instead explore purely a sense of place in time. My pieces are often a reflection of images or ideas I've captured while traveling, using the word "reflection" quite literally in trying to capture the essence of an experience, moment or place that is visually intriguing, engaging the viewers curiosity, imagination and sense of beauty.
Cynthia Jeffries Knox
My work is an antithesis to the notion of body improvement, showing an alternate perspective of female sexuality and body image. The work plays with the taboo of showing fat naked women living in their own satisfied universe, blissfully unaware of cultural ideals about "appropriate" body types. Animals in the work support the humans by mirroring unabashed action and reaction in their surroundings. After all - does the raccoon worry that her hips are too large? My influences are disparate. I am inspired by Jenny Saville's depiction of female flesh as stacked tied meat. I also draw inspiration from the narrative work of local painter Lois Silver and her expressive cast of characters. The materials in these works are simple: mat board, gesso, and oil bar. My work has been described as irreverent expressionism. My intention is to address the weighty questions while the characters exhibit a lightness of being.

I grew up in a household filled with music and art but only started painting about 7 years ago. Being an abstract painter is often a bumpy journey but fortunately the aha moments seem to triumph over the I've forgotten how to paint moments. Working with this group of seven artists is like having a constant cheering section and for me, attests to the notion that creativity is a communal endeavor.
Jean Miller
Painting in a series has challenged and encouraged me to explore how I look at things. I study my subject until I find a unique view. Bright colors allow the subject to fill the canvas. The first painting informs the next painting through color, style or a unique view. I enjoy creating something that causes people to stop, look and wonder.
Katey Miller
Katey Miller is a native Washingtonian. She is primarily an abstract artist who works with a variety of materials and media. She has been painting for about 6 years.
Cynthia J Smidt
Growing up in the diverse cultural atmosphere of the Washington DC area encouraged Cynthia Smidt's love of the visual and performing arts. She draws inspiration for her work from other artists, cultures, and the natural world. She works to live in the moment, bringing the same conscious awareness she has when painting to her everyday life. This state of focus has helped her find subjects that resonate within her. Working from photos of places that she hiked as a child, using a variety of techniques, layering paint, and exaggerating form and light she reveals the personality of the subject and her emotional reaction to it. There is an almost other worldliness in her work which she hopes will help bring the viewer into a state of contemplation.
